Water Festival or Bon Om Touk in Cambodia, which will be held on April 13, 2023, is one of the biggest and most popular festivals in Cambodia.
Most towns and villages in the country take part in the celebrations by spraying some of them splashing water on the road at people and vehicles passing by while rejoicing.
The zonapers editorial team asked the brother of one of the residents who was celebrating Poipet Friday, April -14 -2023.
This festival marks the start of the reverse flow of water between the Mekong and Tonle Sap Rivers. During the rainy season, the Tonle Sap River is filled with air, which then flows upstream to Tonle Sap Lake. This abundant and swift flow of water makes the areas it flows have a lot of fish intake and the land becomes fertile.
The Cambodian Water Festival also marks the end of the rainy season which ties in with the start of winter, said abong
it’s exciting how happy they are while getting wet…!!!
Apart from being a marker of climate change, this festival also has its own historical record. Since the ruins of Angkor, the Khmer people participated in water competitions during this period. The kings used this festival as an evaluation of the training and skills against their naval warriors.
